A Different Drum Update - August 25th, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — Todd @ 12:38 pm

Hello, this is Todd Durrant at A Different Drum.  I hope that the week is starting out nicely for you.  So far it has been a nice one here.  There are three new releases this week which may help your week become even nicer.  Let’s take a look:

NEW ARRIVALS:

Clan of Xymox “In Love We Trust” $15 — This epic band that has had long appeal to several audiences including the gothic fans, synthpop fans, and old-school new wavers is back with a new album that will remain faithful to all those tastes.  I’ve noticed a recent trend with the Clan of Xymox to return to more electronics and less gothic-rock style guitar.  This album follows that trend, while remaining generally melancholy and dark.  Order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/MET608/Clan-of-Xymox-In-Love-We-Trust

Brand New Day “Take Cover” (2CDR) $14 — This is an act that has become a staple in the synthpop underground, recently borrowing guest vocalists from all over.  Once again this 2CD is packed with new tunes that each stand out in their own way.  There are contributing vocals from the signers of Rhythmic Symphony, Tycho Brahe, Breaze, Elevated Sins, A Blue Ocean Dream, etc.   There is also a bonus disc packed with extra remixes, including versions mixed by Daybehavior, Stochastic Theory, Brand New Idol, Machine Made Pleasure, People Theatre, Ultraviolet, and more.   See the track list, listen to audio samples, and order the double-disc here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/BND-CD-002/Brand-New-Day-Take-Cover

Informatik “Arena” $15 — This hard-hitting industrial dance band has become a big part of the Metropolis Records label, cranking out tracks that are club friendly, and this new release is even more so as it focuses on new remixes and new tracks that keep the energy levels high.  Check out the track list and order here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/MET601/Informatik-Arena

I hope that those of you who have ordered during the last couple of weeks have enjoyed the free promos and extras in your packages.  I’ve been trying to keep a steady flow of freebies to reward you for your much appreciated support, and to help you discover new music.  I’ll keep trying to pull together those little bonuses that make it worth-while for you to place orders and wait for shipments to arrive.  I know that in a world of instant gratification, it takes more dedication to order from CD mail-order stores, so I hope to reward that dedication.

Oh, and be sure to listen to the radio stream if you want to hear tracks from the latest arrivals in the store:

http://www.adifferentdrum.com/Player

I’ll also take this opportunity to push my science fiction novel once again.  Yep, I wrote a book.  I think it turned out rather well for a first novel and I’ve enjoyed hearing what people think of it.  In fact, if you’ve picked it up already, I THANK YOU!  I also invite you to leave feedback on Amazon.com here :

http://www.amazon.com/Trigger-Todd-Durrant/dp/1432711520

It really means a lot to me that there are people out there who would take the time to read a book I spend a couple of years writing.  Oh, and if you picked up my book before now, then you are probably one of the lucky few with a first edition that still has several typos.  I hope that will be ultra-collectible for you some day, now that the 2nd edition is out.  hehe :-)

In case you should want an autographed copy and probably some freebie music with it…you can order here directly from me :

Thanks!
-Todd

PS.  If you want to watch the latest no-budget, intentionally minimal and messed-up video from my son Dylan and I, watch here :

Endless Blue “Fever Dreams” (CDR) $12 — This is the third album from Endless Blue, three years in the making.   For those unfamiliar with this act, they play a dreamy, down-tempo, and somewhat melancholy sound with breathy female vocals, provided by Laura Hillman who also sang on the Somegirl “The Velvet Hour” album.   Listen to the audio samples and buy the CD here :

Tenek “Stateless” (CDR) $18 — This British import features some great electronic pop music.   This is a duo made up of Geoff Pinckney (The Nine, Alien#Six13) and Peter Steer.   If you miss some of the great melodies and sounds of The Nine, then this is as close as it gets to a return.  Listen to the audio samples and order the CD here :

Project Pitchfork “Dream Tiresias” $18 — Due to special request, I’ve brought in a few copies of this latest release from the industrial superstars Project Pitchfork, who do also blend in a strong synthpop element in their music.   This import features three bonus remix tracks as well.  You can see the track list and order here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/TRI360CD/Project-Pitchfork-Dream-Tiresias

Various Artists “Orbit Electro” (2CD) $24 — This new compilation from Major Records (Germany) pulls together a bunch of the established as well as some unknown acts that are pushing the new synthpop / electro movement forward.   You get some cool remixes from bands like IAMX, Boytronic, and Ladytron, as well as tracks by newcomers like Tenek, Ultima Bleep, Mink, Eden, etc.   It is a well-rounded collection worth buying to keep up with the scene.   See the tracks and order here :

Thanks so much for your support, especially through these difficult times when I’m trying to find out if there is still a place in the world for A Different Drum.    It means a lot to me every time you take the time to explore new music and buy a CD or two.

A Different Drum Update - August 5th, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — Todd @ 10:19 am

This is Todd at A Different Drum and it’s time for another update.   Though I haven’t been in the office many hours the last couple of weeks, there are some new releases you should know about, and I’m trying to keep the music coming for those of you who are so supportive of the my efforts to keep the business alive.

New Arrivals:

Galaxy Hunter “Sleeping Child” $15 — This band has been the best-selling artist in the “space synth” sub-genre that A Different Drum has ever stocked.  I think it sells well because these guys include some vocals in with their bouncy, sci-fi tinged synth music which is often missing from other releases in the genre.   Their 2nd album again features some vocal performances that blend a man that talks and a woman with a very nice voice that often comes in on the chorus.   Listen to samples and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/SSR00010/Galaxy-Hunter-Sleeping-Child

A.M. Samurai “The First Element” $15 — This is another new space synth release from one of the rising labels in that scene, Space Sound Records.  This is more the traditional approach for the genre where the beats and general arrangements sound very retro, like classic Koto or Laserdance, and the melodies are carried by the synths rather than voices.   You can listen to samples and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/SSR00009/A.M.-Samurai-The-First-Element

Phaser Kontrol “Electro Warriors” $15 — This is a new electro / industrial dance project from Italy featuring music programming by Lorenzo (Voyager) from Syrian plus some rough-edged vocals by John Torso.  Basically, it sounds something like Syrian’s “Alien Nation” album, but with a different singer that has more of an industrial edge.  The tracks are upbeat and have a grinding dance sound.   Check out the audio samples and order the CD here (watch the video too):
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/PO1002-09/Phaser-Kontrol-Electro-Warriors

Kevin Lux “Talk About It” (CDR) $10 — This is an electronic artist that has been putting out new tunes and cranking out albums since the 90’s, focusing on the old-school Kraftwerk sound, with plenty of robot vocals effects and bouncing, utterly synthetic beats and synthesizer melodies.   You can check out the audio samples and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/PulseCD020/Kevin-Lux-Talk-About-It

Cosmic Armchair “A Different View” (CDR-EP) $10 — This is a rarity– an underground synthpop act from Singapore!  This act features traditional synthpop musical structures and a good female lead vocalist.   This 5-track introduction to the band will be of interest to new music explorers and collectors.  Give them a listen and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/CA2009/Cosmic-Armchair-A-Different-View

That is all for this week’s new arrivals.   Other new items are on the way, including a new single by Mesh, from what I’ve seen announced.  So, hopefully as the summer winds down and the autumn approaches, we’ll have a chance to pick up some exciting new music.

On another note, I don’t remember if I mentioned this little no-budget video before.   A few weeks ago when I was feeling particularly melancholy about the clouded future of A Different Drum and was looking back at the history of the business, I wrote a song called “Somnuis Finis”.   My son Dylan and I then made another no-budget video for the track.   I’m actually quite proud of it.  Though the song is rough and intentionally “whiny”, I think the video turned out interesting, and I love the ending guest vocalists by Sheri Shaw.     Check it out :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4dCSv_C7HQ

And with that I wrap up another update.  I hope to be in touch again soon!  Thanks for your support!
