Synthpop Update from May 29th, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — Todd @ 10:30 am

Hello friends of A Different Drum!  It is time for another update, and today I have a mish-mash of news to talk about, plus a special offer.

RENAME NEWS:

I’d like to remind you once again that Rename is still filling slots for “Song Sponsors” on the announced “Real Music for Real People” album.   Those who would like to claim one of the songs, even naming the song and deciding the song’s subject (we’d love for it to be a song about YOU or somebody you know), there are still a few spots available.   Half of the songs are sponsored so far, so there is still time for you to jump in and become a part of Rename’s discography!  Heck, you can even have your photo put in the booklet as one of the sponsors and comment on why you wanted to contribute.

Also, anybody can choose to become a Fan Follower of the project, essentially pre-ordering an autographed copy of the album and buying the right to have access to working demos and updates that will not be shared with the general public.

Sign up as a Song Sponsor, or as a Fan Follower on Rename’s homepage here :

http://www.rename-music.com

You can read more of my thoughts on this very special project on my blog .   I hope that it gets the necessary support to become a reality and create a band+fan interactive musical experience unlike anything we’ve seen in the synthpop scene, or any music scene for that matter.

NEW ARRIVALS:

Red This Ever “Selfless” $14 — This new release by the self-described synth rock band, Red This Ever, is actually quite strong, sometimes reminding me of Iris’ more recent material, blended with that gothic tinge you’d find with The Cruxshadows.  It’s a nice blend of guitars and synth programing and a quality singer that sets them apart as one of the bands to watch in the scene.   You can listen to audio samples of all the tracks and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/artist.php?n=88450114347-9

PRE-ORDERS:

The next pair of collectible CD singles is coming from A Different Drum soon.  Enjoy the energetic, intense single “Pure” from ENDLESS SHAME.   It features several remixes of the song, including an old-fashioned extended version, plus a great club mix of another stand-out song, “Jericho”.    Also coming is another SAUDADE maxi-single “Like You”, which features two versions of the title track, plus two versions of the song “Her Way” and the bonus track “Money and Happiness”.   All three of those songs are remakes of old 80’s demos, just to relive a bit of the spirit of the early synthpop years.

You can watch a television performance and pre-order the Endless Shame CD maxi-single here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/artist.php?n=ADDCD1296

You can watch the goofy C-3PO videos and pre-order the Saudade CD maxi-single here :

Or, you can order both to be shipped together for one low price of $5 by using this link here :

FOLLOW-UP on CONVENTION CHAT:

I appreciate the feedback I received from some of you on my blog discussion of synthpop or electronic music  conventions, as well as my other articles.   I’ll post my follow-up comments not only on my blog, but here, in case you’d like to read onward…

It looks to me like the formula for a successful convention for a specific genre is still unclear.    I still believe that it is possible to have a convention worth traveling to attend as long as it has a lot of different activities and opportunities that couldn’t be experienced elsewhere– bringing together people who share a love of a certain music genre for a fun weekend.  But there are those who feel strongly that the main attraction still must be on high profile live bands (something I’ve seen as “music festivals” more than conventions).   No big bands = no excited attendees.   But the high price tag of high profile bands is prohibitive and has also been the financial downfall of past music festivals in our scene.

I had to smile at one suggestion that a successful synthpop convention would have to have somebody like Depeche Mode play on the first night, New Order on the next, and then maybe somebody newer like Wolfsheim on the third (or maybe it was Beborn Beton that was mentioned).  Well, realizing that Depeche Mode already tours the world, packing arenas, there isn’t really a way to get them to just show up for a convention, especially one that could never pay them what they make on a single night of their own tour.   New Order?  Well, high profile, but also not doing much lately, and certainly wouldn’t come without a huge price tag.   Wolfsheim…again, expensive, but also, they broke up.   Beborn Beton hasn’t exactly been active for years, and I wouldn’t exactly call them a “big name band”.  Not to shoot down the “idea” entirely, but there are many more complications when trying to lure “big name” bands to an event than just throwing names on the table.  Sure, we’d all love to see a show where our dream lineup is playing, but the chances are highly unlikely that it can be done both logistically or financially.

But as another reader commented, maybe our scene isn’t the kind that lends itself to the kind of “other activities” that would make a convention appealing.   Other than listening to bands play, what else is there?  People aren’t prone to dress up, aren’t necessarily into gaming and roll playing like we see at other kinds of successful conventions, and maybe we’re just altogether too boring to make our own good times when pulled together in one place?

Let me describe one more scene before I drop this topic for today.   Having hosted some music festivals (semi-conventions, if you want to think of them that way) and having attended others in our scene, I have seen a big difference in the “party attitude” at the events.   If we’re really coming together only to watch a few bands play live shows, then why do we see so little general excitement from the audience?  I’ve seen the small audience basically just STAND there, clapping politely after each song.  Yes, there were four or five real screamers whooping-it-up in the audience, singing along, and dancing like a crazed fan, but generally speaking, the audience is mostly standing, maybe swaying, and giving a polite cheer now and then.

Now, compare THAT to what I have seen a couple of times while attending a relatively small anime convention in Boise, Idaho (by “small” I mean around 500 people, which is bigger than many of the synthpop events I’ve been to, yet small for an anime convention).   Two of the years I attended, they’d set up a band from A Different Drum’s label to play a live show as part of their Friday night dance.   In both occassions, here is what I saw.  I saw an audience that new absolutely NOTHING about the band, could not sing along with any song by said band, but acted like it was the party of the year.   They came in costumes, they waved glow sticks, light sabers, you name it, while dancing, doing the limbo, hopping around the ballroom in long trains, shouting and screaming during the songs, encouraging the bands, and begging for more.  Heck, one of those bands only quit playing because the singer had to pee so badly he couldn’t physically stay on stage any longer!  Otherwise, the audience wanted more and more.   They didn’t want the party to end!   You see, those folks got together at their convention FOR A GOOD TIME.   They didn’t politely stand and stare at the main attraction.  In fact, I don’t even know what the main attraction was at the convention (only a couple minor voice actors were announced as guests), but they had paid for a good time, and they were going to have one!

Are we just too cool to get together and party?  That’s the question.  And by “party” I don’t mean to get drunk, sit around in our buddy’s hotel suite until we pass out.  I mean, to get together in large groups and have fun with the music we love, even if it isn’t a big name band on stage.   That is the real question.  I, for one, am getting older, and don’t have that crazy party spirit that I had when I was 18.  But I do think I’m capable of having a lot of fun even without Depeche Mode.  In fact, I’ve said before that my favorite part of most festivals I’ve attended have been the “hanging out with friends” parts.  It has been the stuff besides the show that I remember most.  For example, when I attended “Synthpop Goes the World” in Toronto (perhaps the biggest collection of modern synthpop heros in a single location, with the liveliest crowd and most energy), I got to see bands like Mesh, And One, Assemblage 23, Red Flag, Cosmicity, etc. etc. all in three nights.  But what do I treasure?  It was things like ordering Chinese food at 2AM with a dozen friends and having an improvised picnic in the park across from the hotel in the middle of the night.  We laughed, ate, and enjoyed being together so much that it was hard to wake up the next day to go see more shows.

Ah, memories.  How many more such memories will there be when it comes to this scene?  I hope many, but the barriers seem to be rising, and hopes diminishing.   I am reminded that there are long-lasting, successful music festivals in Europe every year.   Those do encompass a much larger audience, blending gothic and industrial music along with electronic dance music in general… more like “alternative” or “dark music” conventions.   I think that helps build a larger audience of cross-interests, but there also is the geographical factor:  Most places in Europe, even across country borders, are only a train ride or drive away.  It’s a big deal to fly across the USA, or drive for two and three days just to get to a convention, and thus, harder to find ways to lure attendees and build something successful.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for being a friend and supporter!

Update for May 20th, 2009 - A Lot of Topics to Consider

Filed under: Uncategorized — Todd @ 10:14 am

NOTE:  If you are in the Salt Lake City area, come see me at the SLC downtown Radisson Hotel during the CONduit Convention this weekend (May 22nd and 23rd) in the vendors’ room.   You don’t think you need a convention pass to go into the vending room.  I’ll be there selling music as well as my book, TRIGGER.

Here is the update from May 20th, 2009:

Hello friends of A Different Drum!  It is time for another update.  This week I only have one new arrival to talk about (new album by Akanoid).  But there are a few news items and discussions I’d like to share and solicit feedback in this update, so please read on.

First of all, you should have seen the update from last week about both Intuition offering demos to those who join their mailing list.  See their Myspace blog on how to join here:

http://www.myspace.com/intuition2

And also about Rename’s groundbreaking new album project, “Real Songs for Real People”, where YOU can have a chance to become either a Song Sponsor and claim one of the tracks as your own, written about yourself or about somebody you know.  Or, you can become a Fan Follower and essentially pre-order the autographed album along with all production demos, lyric previews, and updates along the way so you get a bunch of exclusives.  You can register for either through Rename’s website and use the Paypal link at the bottom:

http://www.rename-music.com

As of this moment, half of the 15 tracks are claimed by Song Sponsors, so if having your story on a Rename album is an exciting idea for you, then it would be a good idea to claim a spot.

NEW ARRIVAL:

Akanoid “Civil Demon” $20 — This is the latest offering from a top-notch German band that stands out in the independent pop scene by combining elements of dance, synthpop, and alternative rock.  I would say that a lot of their stuff sounds like current music from IRIS with really good vocals and a generally all-around appeal to anybody who loves a polished pop act with an edge.  They’ve had several releases in the past, most of which go out-of-print rather quickly do to their large underground following.  Check out the audio samples and order your CD here :

TODD’S RANDOM THOUGHTS

I’ve mentioned before that I have a personal blog where I share my random thoughts on different subjects, usually based on my struggle to make a living in the music business, etc. A couple of days ago I wrote an article talking about conventions.  I used my observations as a vendor at anime conventions to throw a new light on synthpop conventions, mostly to consider why we haven’t seen a very successful, ongoing convention in our scene, and whether or not we could even pull one off.  I would LOVE to get your feedback and thoughts on what you think would make a quality, REAL convention experience in our scene.  You can read my thoughts here :

http://toddiovision.wordpress.com

Right under the article title there is a “comments” link that you can click to leave your thoughts.  I’ll reply to comments as well, within the forum.  I plan to follow up on this article to flesh-out a dream convention that would be both affordable to organize, and worthwhile for attendees in EVERY aspect (not just a festival show or concert).

While you are visiting my blog, feel free to look over my past articles, which may be of interest to you:

“Traditional Music Promotion = Cash in the Toilet” — just my experience with the traditional concepts of advertising music through magazines, DJ’s, etc.

“I Love My Job” — an article about why I still work with A Different Drum even though it is become more and more of a challenge, as well as having an adverse effect on my pocketbook.

“The No-Budget Video Revolution” — a few thoughts about no-budget videos and the history of video promotion for the synthpop underground.  Plus, my recent videos made with my son.

“Six Months in the Market” — a boring discussion about my first six months playing with very small amounts in the stock market.

“Completely Deaf” — yet another venting about the complete lack of understanding that much of the public has about the damage of file sharing, even when it’s explained directly and honestly.  What does it say about our culture?

“Rename’s Real Songs for Real People” — the new album project and how it involves the fans in the music creation process from the very conception.

“Writing My Book TRIGGER” — I talk about how I decided to write a book, my love for the long process and the excitement of seeing it through to publication.

BUY MY BOOK!

OK, speaking of my book, if you are a fan of science fiction that combines elements of space opera, military sci-fi, speculative fiction, time paradoxes, etc. then maybe you’ll enjoy it!  Heck, I hope that the book is even enjoyable to those who just like a good story, even if science fiction isn’t your thing (keeping in mind that I am not a scientist, so I can’t call it “hard sci-fi”).

You can buy a book directly from me if you’d like a dedication written in it:

http://www.todd-durrant.com

Or, if you want to buy it from Amazon.com then it will help raise my rank there.

Yes, this is the first novel I’ve published, so I’m new at it.  I’m no Arthur C. Clarke or Robert A. Heinlein, but I’m still proud of having accomplished it :-)

That’s all for this week, unless I get a surprise package in the next couple of days.   Thanks for your support and friendship!

RENAME - Real Songs for Real People - Become a Part Of the Album!

Well, I’m very excited to be part of a very unique and exciting new project being announced this week by RENAME!   Marcus Fellechner and I have worked together to create a new music experience for the synthpop scene, and indeed the entire pop market!

First of all, just to update you a little bit on RENAME, there are currently two CD maxi-singles in production which are planned for release this summer and autumn:   “I’m Happy” and “Play in the Rain”

But aside from the continued production of new singles, Rename is announcing the release of a completely separate album project next summer (2010).  But unlike any other project I’ve seen before, this album will be written and recorded entirely in honor of the fans who become “Song Sponsors” for each of the 15 planned tracks.   This is a unique opportunity for anybody to have a song written especially for them, and included on a RENAME album release!

You can see the details of the project, which is currently called “Real Songs for Real People” by looking at Rename’s official homepage here:

http://www.rename-music.com

But let me give you the story in more detail right here in this blog.

Marcus and I have been discussing the challenges and also the opportunities of the new music market, and how the artists can involve the listeners to a higher degree to create not only a traditional album, but a work that completely invovles and engages the listeners and fans, taking them on a memorable journey.   How could an artist create such an experience that the fans would not only enjoy, but be willing to financially support in a small way, because of the enhanced experience?

The discussion resulted in the creation of the “Real Songs for Real People” project.   Over the course of a year, RENAME will write and record 15 songs, with each song being sponsored by a real person, and written according to the outline given by that particular Song Sponsor.   Let’s imagine a fan named John Johnson, and this guy is a big pop music fan, and now one of the bands he enjoys offers to write a song just for him!   The song can even carry his own name as the title!   Let’s say that John Johnson is a student at a university, but has had a hard time imagining how his education in humanities is going to actually get him a lucrative career, and he wants a song about the struggle to choose between doing what he loves and doing what is practical.  Well, he can sign up as a “Song Sponsor” for Rename’s new album, paying a reasonable fee of $250 to claim one of the songs as his own, and then he sends that outline to the band.   A year later, the album is released, and one of the songs is called “John Johnson” (if that’s what he wishes) and it’s about his own story!

Or, let’s say that John Johnson has a girlfriend named Sally Simple who he loves for her sincere, honest nature and thinks that she stands above all the other girls because she doesn’t hide behind a mask of makeup and drama.   So, he signs up as a song sponsor, pays the $250, and a year later the album comes out with a song about his girlfriend.   However, in this case (where the song is about somebody else) Rename will not put her full name as the song title, since she is not the song sponsor and we don’t want anybody upset for the use of their full name without their consent.  So, the song is called something like, “Sally, You’re Better Than The Rest”, or whatever.

Now, aside from having a song about themselves, or about their own life story, or about a loved one, friend, pet, family member, etc.  A Song Sponsor will also be listed in the CD booklet liner notes, and can even include a photo of themselves as the inspiration for the song.  So, they also become part of the CD booklet and a permanent part of Rename’s own musical history.

Before I go much further, let me make it clear that Rename will still WRITE the songs, though the stories will be based as closely as possible to the song sponsor’s suggested ouline or subject matter.  So, there is always artistic license and the band has the ultimate say in the way the song turns out.  That maintains a level of surprise and mystery– a person sponsors the song and gives the desired outline, then watches, waits, and listens to find out what Rename has put together with that support and their story.   The band may also not want to sing a song that directly says things that are inflamatory or insulting, even if a song sponsor says they’d like a song about the person they hate the most, or some recent break-up.  The artist can cover those subjects tastefully, and according to their own interpretation.  Sure, there can be songs about break-ups or people who ruin your life, but don’t expect a string of cuss-words and death wishes in the final lyrics.

YOU’RE NOT A SPONSOR, BUT YOU WANT TO WATCH WHAT HAPPENS!

Now, being a Song Sponsor for this project isn’t for everybody.  Obviously, there are only a maximum of 15 slots available, so there will only be 15 Real Songs for Real People.   Plus, not everybody would want to pay $250 to have their own Rename song.  But we’re betting that there are a lot of music fans out there who would LOVE to follow the progress of such a project.  You may just be curious to see and hear what’s happening as the project moves along.   Or, you may be a Rename fan or collector who wants access to some extras along the way.   Here is another option for you.

If you go to Rename’s homepage (listed above) and read about the program, you’ll see that anybody can sign up to be a “Fan Follower”.   The Song Sponsors will have all the same access as Fan Followers, which is this:   Anybody who pays $25 to be a Fan Follower will be able to follow the progress of the project by way of special email updates from Rename, announcing which songs are in production, giving looks at lyrics as they are written or tweaked along the way, and will also be given access to exclusive demo previews as the songs go into production.    So, the Song Sponsors AND Fan Followers will have these updates for a year and will be able to hear songs in their early stages and will be given exclusive MP3’s etc. to put in their collection of Rename rarities.

ALSO, every Fan Follower and every Song Sponsor will receive an autographed copy of the finished CD once it is released in 2010.  So, all these people will have pre-purchased the finished product and will have it mailed to them automaticaly once it is finished.   So, for the $25, you are not only getting an autographed CD of a unique new album, but also an unspecified number of demos, previews, and news bulletins for an entire year.

Of course, once the album is released into the market on CD and as a digital download, anybody will be able to buy it as a regular album.  Anybody will be able to hear the final result of this unique and ambitious project.

There you go!  Now, at the moment I’m writing this blog, 3 of the 15 Song Sponsor spots have already been claimed, simply by people who visited the Rename website during the last three days without any notification.  So, if you think it is an exciting idea to sponsor a song, then you better jump on over to Rename’s website:

http://www.rename-music.com

Once again, there is no limit to the Fan Followers, but we may close the sign-up window in two or three months since updates will begin and anybody signing up after that time may end up missing some of what they are paying to receive.

When you are on the band website, you’ll see an easy drop-down menu next to a Paypal payment button.   Use that drop-down menu to select “Song Sponsor” or “Fan Follower” and then click to complete your payment and sign-up.  You’ll be contacted at your payment email address about your song, or about the updates.  So, PLEASE be sure you have a current email address assigned to your payment.

I, for one, am very curious to see how this album turns out and hope that it becomes something of a landmark for the new music market.

Filed under: Uncategorized — Todd @ 9:48 am

I forgot to copy the email update earlier, so here it is.  One new note– the new VNV Nation “Reformation 01″ deluxe box is in stock now and can be ordered from the homepage.

Sorry for the second intrusion in your “in box”, but the last update was sent by Yahoogroups with some strange formatting that made it hard to read, at least in my own email.  So, I’m sending it again and hope it works so you can actually read it this time…

Hello friends of the synthpop community!  It’s time for another weekly update.   There are some nice new releases to talk about this week, but I know that several of you are wondering about the BIG, new VNV Nation release.   That one is expected to arrive here next week, so watch the homepage closely– once you see it appear on www.adifferentdrum.com in the catalog, then you’ll know it is here and ready to ship.

Also, for the fans of B! Machine, I thought I’d let you know that the band is releasing a series of singles directly to the fans from the band homepage.  You can order those singles using Paypal directly from the homepage here :

COME SEE ME IN SALT LAKE CITY:

If you happen to live in the area of Salt Lake City, I’d like to invite you to stop by the vendor’s room at the CONduit convention where you can visit with me. I’ll be hanging out there on Friday and Saturday with a vending table, selling a few CD’s and my new sci-fi book, “Trigger”. You don’t need to have a pass to the convention to enter the vending room, or so I’m told. It is at the downtown Radisson Hotel, and you can see details of the convention here :

Thanks for your continued support and love of the music!
