I got a few European imports in this week.  So, let’s take a look at what arrived in the store…

NEW ARRIVALS:

Ashbury Heights “Take Cair Paramour” (limited 2CD) $22 — This is one of the top albums of the year, in my opinion.   It is as slick as any major production on the market, with a great blend of modern synthpop and edgy, new wave rock elements.   The male and female vocals blend perfectly, just like the synths and guitars and energetic beats.   It is a true classic!  You can listen to audio samples and order this 2CD edition here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/OUT416-417/Ashbury-Heights-Take-Cair-Paramour-Limited-Edition

Ashbury Heights “Origins” (2CD) $22 — In case you missed their last album, which is now out-of-print in it’s original form, you can pick up this double-disc which compiles together the tracks from that album with their “Morningstar in a Black Car” EP and a couple exclusive bonuses.   Order this 2CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/OUT421-422/Ashbury-Heights-Origins

Neutral Lies “A Deceptive Calm” $20 — This is a very smooth, cool synthpop album with something of a 90’s flavor (think of those old bands from Sweden’s October label, like Vision System, Kiethevez, Sombre View, etc.).    It is put out by the cool label Boredom Product (Celluloide, Foretaste, Dekad, etc.).   Check out the audio samples and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/BDMCD13/Neutral-Lies-A-Deceptive-Calm

Bionic “Close to Nature” $20 — This band has an edgy synthpop sound that borders on EBM, with grinding, dark vocals and slamming beats.   You can listen to the audio samples and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/EZ10C423/Bionic-Close-to-Nature

Distance “At the End of All Things” $20 — This is a very chilled synthpop act, with mellow, melancholy moods to their songs.   It reminds me a bit of Gentle Touch.   You can listen to audio samples and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/EZ10C412/Distance-At-the-End-of-All-Things

NamNamBulu “Distances / Black Edition” $20 — This is a re-release of the one and only album from NamNamBulu, which garnered quite a following in the synthpop and futurepop scenes.   This time it comes out with a black cover and a couple of bonus tracks for the hardcore collectors.    You can order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/FACT3151/NamNamBulu-Distances-The-Black-Edition

In other news…

A Different Drum’s new VIP Subscriber program filled up by Monday.   There are currently no openings, but if you are interested in becoming a VIP subscriber to receive one new label release per month, feel free to let me know.  I can put you in the waiting list.  The if somebody unsubscribes, you’ll be there to take the available spot.

For those of you who ARE now VIP Subscribers, thanks for your support!   The program is pushing full-speed ahead, though I’m still setting up the personal logins on our homepage so you can pick up additional content and get the latest news.   It will take a while to get all of you entered into the system.

The first release that you will receive is currently at the factory and should be ready to ship in early September:

CHRISTOPHER ANTON “Destination: X”
This is an excellent album from the singer that you know from Information Society’s “Synthesizer” album!  Christopher teamed up with producer Nick Tutone to put together one of the best synthpop albums of the year, and until the VIP Program, it was only planned for digital download release.  Now each subscriber will be getting one of only 300 physical CD’s in the world.  You’ll love it!

More cool surprises to come for the VIP Subscribers :-)

Oh, and I have updated the Radio Player so you can check out new music from this week’s arrivals:

New VIP Subscription Program from A Different Drum - Read and Reply

Filed under: Uncategorized — Todd @ 10:54 am

If you are interested in the following program, please email todd@adifferentdrum.com and let me know!

Introducing the new VIP Subscription Program for A Different Drum!

This new plan is currently being explored as a way to keep the new music flowing in physical, CD format from A Different Drum’s label.  It does not affect the online store which sells fun imports and independent releases– everything will continue as normal in the store.

This new program is presented as a way to keep the avid CD collectors happy, with new synthpop / electronic pop music from established artists as well as new artists!  The way this program works is very unique, so please read carefully to see if you would be interested in subscribing!   At this point, I only need to know if you are interested– simply reply to this email and let me know how many subscriptions you would likely desire. ( email to: todd@adifferentdrum.com )  If there are enough serious CD collectors who want a steady stream of new music, then this program will be launched.  If not…then A Different Drum’s label functions will remain minimal.

THE VIP PROGRAM:

As a VIP subscriber, you would pay $10 per month ($12 for overseas) for one CD release per month (automatically billed at the end of the month).  You would be helping to fund a steady stream of new releases through your subscription, and in return, you would be one of 200 - 300 people in the entire world to receive the CD release!   Yes, ONLY the VIP’s and the band would receive the physical CD, and it would be instantly out-of-print!

Your one new release per month would include new music from established artists– music which would otherwise only be released as digital downloads.  Plus the releases would include some completely new artists who are being introduced to the market for the first time.  Plus we hope to include some special rarities.

Let the download fans buy their iTunes, but if you are a CD collector, this program guarantees that you’ll have a very limited, and very fun, tangible product, every month!  Nobody else in the world would have it!

That’s right, we would manufacture 300 CD’s TOTAL.  100 of those CD’s would be delivered to the band so they can use them however they see fit (sold at shows or whatever).  The other 200 CD’s would be instantly shipped to the VIP’s only!   Then it’s over.  Sold-out.  Done.  Every release is a limited release, and only the people who are funding this new music through their subscription will have the physical product.   Basically, if you are a VIP, then you’re helping to keep the physical CD format alive in the music scene that you love, so you should be the one who takes the prize!

BENEFITS:

–> New music every month in a collectible, CD format for a low $10 price!
–> Subscribe as many times as you want, if you desire multiple copies for future use.
–> VIP CD’s will not be physically sold in other major stores, even Amazon.com (only listed to make other shoppers envious).
–> VIP CD’s will not be sold on A Different Drum’s website after VIP delivery.
–> VIP’s will be given access to subscriber-only content such as remix files and bonus tracks.
–> VIP’s can recommend future releases because they are funding the product.

COST:

Only $10 per month per VIP subscription for USA / Canada / Mexico.  $12 per month for other countries because of higher postage costs. Payment will be set up for automatic monthly billing through Paypal (uses credit card, bank account, or Paypal balance).

PRODUCT AND DELIVERY:

The VIP CD’s will be packaged in nice cardboard sleeves with full design.  This way they will look great, but also remain inexpensive for shipping, since the delivery is included in the subscription price.  The design will clearly display that the release is limited to 300 units worldwide and that it is a VIP release.

WILL IT GROW?

Honestly, I hope the demand grows.  However, subscriptions are limited to 200 for now.  Only when there is a large enough demand will we consider increasing the quantity.  This is a small, special club of supporters.  I hope enough of you like the idea to get it started!   Please reply to this email if you are interested.  If enough of you want the goods, then I’ll set up a subscription form for you.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

A Different Drum Update - July 22nd, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — Todd @ 11:45 am

Hello again from A Different Drum!

I want to thank everybody for the encouraging emails and ideas about keeping our little piece of the independent music world alive and kicking.  I’m sorry if anybody thought that my update was a bit personal– I suppose I shouldn’t complain about my own challenges when it comes to making a living.  We all go through those times.  I just wanted you, my good friends and long time customers, to know how it may effect A Different Drum going forward.

So, just to sum up how things stand right now:  A Different Drum is of course, STILL OPEN.  I’m happy to sell you some great synthpop CD’s!  I’m still stocking a lot of music, still ordering new releases, and the store is going forward.  If I get another job to pay the bills, it will simply mean that ADD will be more “part time” for me.  That may result in slower shipping times, though I’ll do my best.  I’ll adjust as I see how things go on this end.     So yeah, we’re not closing down!   Feel free to order and I look forward to bringing lots of new stuff to you soon!

As for the label side of A Different Drum, I agree with the comments made by a couple of friends and long-time followers– one of the things that always made A Different Drum great was the ability to bring new music from new artists to the fans.   I’ve had to slow that down with the financial situation the way it is.   But I’ve been talking about an idea with some people, and it seems like it could be a wonderful solution to keep the label not only alive, but also it would help to bring a lot of the cool, underground bands to a legit CD release (for those folks not into downloading MP3’s).   I’ll run that idea by everybody in a separate email soon.  If it gets a lot of support, then I’m excited for the future!

OK, now on to a couple new releases which came in this week:

NEW ARRIVALS:

Cause and Effect “Artificial Construct Part One” (CDEP) $7 — This is hopefully a big teaser for things to come, because this new EP is awesome!   It not only has some of the dreamy, dancey sounds of the band’s newer material, but the vocal vibe and feel of their classic material from the 90’s.   This is a really good 4-tracker.  It makes you want more, and hopefully there will be more soon from this top-notch act!   Order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/88450134370-1/Cause-and-Effect-Artificial-Construct-Part-One

Hyperbubble “Better Set Your Phasers to Stun” (MCD) $8 — This cool imported single features three remixes of the title track and two bonus tracks for your listening pleasure.  Hyperbubble is the ultimate in bouncy, bubbly, silly synthpop fun.  With melodic female vocals and giggly, fun-loving lyrics, it is the epitome of  “happy synthpop”.     Pick up the single here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/BGUM01/Hyperbubble-Petter-Set-Your-Phasers-to-Stun

COMING SOON:   In case you didn’t know, there is a new IRIS album coming out the first week in September!   We expect to have it available for pre-order soon.   So, keep an eye open for that ;-)

Thanks again for your support!  And watch for the next email which should outline a possible way to keep the physical, CD format alive for synthpop collectors and fans, including music from established bands and newcomers.   If there is enough interest, we’ll run with it!

Important Message from A Different Drum concerning the Future

Filed under: Uncategorized — Todd @ 11:24 am

Hello, this is Todd at A Different Drum.  I am using this Saturday morning to have a little, frank discussion with you– my good friends and music supporters who receive this regular update.

As you’ve heard me suggest before, the music market has been struggling increasingly over the last few years.  Particularly the smaller bands, labels, and stores have suffered.  In fact, I can’t think of even one independent music store (physical store) within a hundred miles or more of my residence.  Indie stores are a dying bread.  That has also spread to the mail-order and online stores who now struggle to survive in a world where music is unavoidably free and easy to obtain without lending the financial support of a physical purchase.  Even legal MP3 purchases have changed the market to such an extent that profits are very hard to come by when selling music.

But I don’t want to dwell on that as much as on my own situation here at A Different Drum.  After all, A Different Drum is one of those independent stores that has seen a huge drop in sales and support over the last few years.  Just as a quick example…our monthly sales of label CD’s through Amazon.com has dropped to less than 1/10th of what it was even 4 years ago.  Our one homepage and a couple of other cool mail-order stores are the only remaining places where any real sales are generated.  And those sales are down too.   It has been about two years now that I have been unable to take any real payment for my full-time job.  Understandably, that can be a big stress on a family man, as I have not been able to take on a roll as a provider for my family.  It is harder and harder to justify the hours and hours I spend as a “hobby” or as a “service” while debts go unpaid and my family struggles.

As an additional note, you may have noticed that the label has released a lot less music lately.  Some people might make the argument that the fewer releases is the reason for the lower sales.  Well, the truth is reverse– the lower sales made it impossible to keep putting out new music because every new release added to a very large manufacturing debt that is still not completely paid.  We were putting out so much music a few years ago that the situation became dire once people stopped buying CD’s and started downloading.  The result…no money for new releases, and too much risk to release new bands.

Needless to say, I have thought and thought and thought about what I could do differently.  I’ve attempted a few things to “improve” A Different Drum’s store, but those changes have often had no meaningful results for one reason or another (one example is our MP3 store, which was rarely used because interested customers already have regular, well established sources for buying MP3’s…not to mention the inquiries I was getting from our server about the number of files stored on the site).

I suggested on Facebook a few days ago that it would be best for my current personal situation if I could sell A Different Drum to somebody who is motivated, interested, and in a position where they could make a living running a small store (maybe somebody with less family obligations, etc.).   Of course, the replies I received about that idea were mostly, “NOOO! You can’t do that!”  Only a couple of people asked me about terms.  I explained privately that I would only sell the business for a price that would allow me to pay off all debts, royalties, etc. associated with the business so I could leave without a continued financial burden, and the buyer would only have their own purchase price to consider in terms of measuring profitability.

The fact is, the few supports still around don’t seem to want A Different Drum to leave or drastically change.   I don’t want A Different Drum to leave either.  I’ve dedicated nearly two decades of my life to this business.  But reality is what it is.  So…what to do now?

I’m still open to selling the business to somebody who is able and excited to take it on.  But I’m also open to any other ideas which could help make the business profitable once again, without ruining the integrity of A Different Drum.

I’ve also considered putting together one more big party or convention for supporters and fans to gather and maybe pull together enough business and support to actually make some money to pay some of the bills.  But you know, I’ve hosted festivals before and can honestly say, I have NEVER made a profit on a concert or festival.  I did get quite a lot of merchandise sales during a couple of those events, but the event itself always lost money.  Other festivals have seen similar results– it is VERY hard to put together an event with many bands playing and get enough support to pay for the expenses.

But maybe a non-concert-oriented event?  I know that a lot of us enjoy the idea of simply “getting together”.  The social interaction, networking, discussion, and even shopping is more the reason to assemble?  If I were able to pull together a convention-style event that did not have the expenses associated with putting on a concert, would anybody come?  Or would it just be another “party” where I walk away a thousand dollars more in debt?   I’d love to do something like this in a place like Minneapolis, if there were enough people to support it.  But my past experience has me doubtful.

So, I’m open to your suggestions!  I’m open to your ideas!  I’m open to your offers!  I value your opinion, and I admit, at this point I’m pretty desperate.  I have to turn this around in a couple months or walk away, downsize to nearly nothing, and find a new career (something difficult and awkward to do for a middle-aged guy like me who has run a music business since graduating from college).

I look forward to your feedback and suggestions.  I’ll answer as quickly as I can.  Don’t think I’m ignoring you if it takes a few days to reply.  I want to take every opinion seriously.

I’m also going to send out a poll from Yahoogroups about the convention idea, just to see what kind of response I get (if any).  Watch for that and share your opinion.  Here is a link to the poll, in case you don’t get an email:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/a_different_drum_update/surveys?id=13024144

Thanks for your valuable support!  And of course, I appreciate your CD orders!  Believe it or not, every single one is something of a life saver and seems to give A Different Drum “one more day of breath,” so to speak.

A Different Drum Update - July 16th, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — Todd @ 2:21 pm

This is Todd at A Different Drum, and I have a small update this week.  There are three new items I’d like to point out to you, plus a little alert that I’ve started listing a few out-of-print titles from A Different Drum’s label on the website, having found a few goodies in a couple old boxes in the corner ;-)

NEW ARRIVALS:

Null Device “Suspending Belief” $14 — I have long been a fan of Null Device.  These guys perform an electronic pop sound that stands out, incorporating wonderful ethnic drums and atmosphere.   The lyrics are always intelligent as is the production.  I’m excited for this new album!  You can listen to audio samples and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/NR044/Null-Device-Suspending-Belief

Silent Auction “H on Earth” $14 — This is a cool underground synthpop act that blends danceable synthpop sounds with both female and male lead vocals.   The songs are catchy, bouncy, and fun.  You can listen to audio samples and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/NR043/Silent-Auction-H-On-Earth

Tenek “Blinded By You” (MCD) $6 — For those of you who don’t know, Tenek is the fun synthpop offspring of The Nine and Alien#Six13.    If you miss the voice of The Nine, then pick up the Tenek album and this new single– you’ll love it!  Order the CD single here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/TOFF0019/Tenek-Blinded-By-You

OK, and if you are a collector and need to pick up some out-of-print titles from A Different Drum’s label, keep checking the “used” CD section on the homepage.   These CD’s aren’t actually used, but in perfect condition and ready to go into your collection.  I just wanted to list them in a place where they could easily be found:

NEW ARRIVALS:

AnaRobik “Operator’s Manual” $12 — This new release features analogue-style, retro-flavored synth sounds and a mostly processed female vocal lead for a fun, bouncy flavor.   The CD comes in a cool cardboard fold-out package.   You can listen to audio samples and order this CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/INCD1001-2/Anarobik-Operators-Manual

Phenotract “Shifting” $12 — The last album I had in stock from Phenotract had an edgy dance sound.  This time around, the band takes a more dreamy, atmospheric approach.   The synths and vocals are layered with plenty of reverb and there is a backup female vocalist on most songs as well.    Listen to the audio samples and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/82917110132-9/Phenotract-Shifting

Dual Density “Soul Ecstasy” $20 — This new European release features very bouncy, Euro-dance flavored synthpop with female lead vocals.  It is almost in the “space synth” or “italo disco” flavor on some tracks, but always with melodic vocals.    This is happy, dancey pop music.  You can listen to audio samples and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/CRDD001/Dual-Density-Soul-Ecstasy

Various Artists “Electropop 4″ $20 — This is the next in the popular, limited edition series which features many exclusive remixes from today’s new synthpop artists.    I don’t know many of the bands on this latest volume– Carved Souls, Destination, Hollow Me, Rubika, etc.   It is a fun one for exploring some new acts in the scene.   Order this latest volume here :

Synthpop Bargain Shopping Tips

Filed under: Uncategorized — Todd @ 8:20 am

Hey, this is Todd at A Different Drum.  I wanted to let you know that I have updated the “discount bin” in the store now.  This is where CD’s are given big discounts for clearance.   Once I sell out of any of these CD’s, then they are deleted.  They go on a first-come, first-serve basis (no back-orders on discounted CD’s).   These items may or may not come back into the catalog in the future.

If you’d like to pick up some cheap music, take a look and see if there is anything that interests you:

http://www.adifferentdrum.com/catalog/discount/

Also, take a look at the handy $3 CD store which shows the items from the discount bin that are at the nifty low price of $3

http://www.adifferentdrum.com/threedollars.php

I don’t have a lot of t-shirts at the moment, but there are a couple good deals there if you need a new t-shirt to show off:

Anybody who orders one or more items from these discount and t-shirt lists during the next few days will receive a free mystery item in your package, just for kicks.

A Different Drum Update - June 28th, 2010

Filed under: Uncategorized — Todd @ 12:00 pm

It is time for another quick update from A Different Drum!  There is a nice little pile of CD’s that came into the store this week, so let us have a look!

NEW ARRIVALS:

Absent One “Blowback” $20 — This new import from Russia is a fun, edgy synthpop album that has a lot of energy.   There are several Youtube clips you can watch of live performances in Russia (see the songs “Night” and “Important”, etc.).   Listen to audio samples and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/SPR108/Absent-One-Blowback

Jens Bader “Climax” $16 — Jens has put out frequent new albums the last few years, but without sacrificing any quality. His song writing is always interesting and very personal, and the sound is becoming more and more like Pet Shop Boys, in my opinion.  This new album continues a nice streak.  You can listen to audio samples and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/Jens2010/Jens-Bader-Climax

Purple Fog Side “Music for Indigo Kids” $20 — We had the previous album by this Russian band in stock before,  and though it took a while, I got a few of this newer release.  This one features edgy music with a combination of growling, male vocals, and dreamy, floating female leads.   It has more appeal to the fans of darker electro and industrial dance, with a semi-gothic tone.  You can order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/SPR086/Purple-Fog-Side-Music-For-Indigo-Kids

IAMX “Dogmatic Infidel Comedown OK (Remixes)” $15 — IAMX has become a popular icon in both the synthpop market as well as the new generation of new wavers and indie pop kids.  With a flashy style and dramatic flare, it is easy to become a fan.  This new remix collections features previously unreleased versions that collectors and DJ’s will enjoy.  See the track list and order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/MET650/IAMX-Dogmatic-Infidel-Comedown-OK-Remixes

Suicidal Romance “Shattered Heart Reflections” $15 — This is a very cool new act that combines a melodic female lead vocalist with some raspy male background vocals and energetic synthpop / semi-futurepop music.   They made quite a splash in Europe and have thus been licensed to Metropolis Records for the USA.    You can order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/MET656/Suicidal-Romance-Shattered-Heart-Reflections

Edge of Dawn “Anything That Gets You Through the Night” $15 — This side-project of Seabound has become a steady seller to the industrial dance audience.    You can order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/MET664/Edge-of-Dawn-Anything-That-Gets-You-Through-the-Night

A Kiss Could Be Deadly “Farewell” (CDEP) $8 — This new EP features some new songs and remixes from a band that clearly draws on the old new wave sound that blends fun rock and synth sounds with a cool female lead vocalist.   They sound to me like somebody who could have had top charting hits in the 80’s with a modern new edge.  You can check out some of their stuff on Youtube.    Order the CD here :
http://www.adifferentdrum.com/buy/MET654/A-Kiss-Could-Be-Deadly-Farewell

ANYTHING BOX in Minneapolis:

Anything Box has never played a show in Minneapolis, but it is coming soon!

On September 11th, 2010
Tickets go on sale July 10th at www.brownpapertickets.com

Opening bands are Thought Thieves and Duck Duck Punch.  Special guest DJ is Paul Robb from Information Society!

That’s all for this week.  Thanks for your support!
